Who is Barack Obama? Barack Obama is the presidential nominee for the Democratic Party. He was born on August fourth, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. His father, Barack Obama senior was an African-American, born in 1936 in the Alego, Siaya district in Kenya and his mother, Ann Dunham, was a Caucasian woman, born on November 29, 1941 in Witchita, Kansas. His parents first met during his mother’s college trip in Hawaii during Junior and Senior years at college. As she continued to stay for academic purposes, she got to know Obama senior more and more and began to enjoy spending time with him. As a result in 1960, they were married and soon after in 1961, Barack junior came into the world. In 1963 they quickly divorced leaving Obama junior at age 2. Not knowing his father too well, it did not have a great impact on him. Soon after their divorce his mother married an Indonesian oil manager. Following their marriage came the political unrest in Indonesia, forcing them to leave to Jakarta, away from all the political strife, and where Obama’s half sister would be born. Even in school he had a tough time. While attending the school of Punahou, his mother and step-father had divorced, as result forcing Obama’s family to suffer through struggles, dealing mainly with their financial status. This pushed Obama to study harder and would be on scholarship from fifth grade to his last year of high-school. In school Obama was one of the few African-Americans on campus, but since his mother couldn’t always take care of him properly because of the little amount of income she received working, many times he stayed at his grandparents house. After leaving high-school, he attended Occidental college in Los Angeles from 1979 go 1985. After finishing Occidental, he went to Colombia University and studied as a civil rights attorney. During his time there he became the first African-American to be a president of the Harvard Law Review. Later taught constitutional law at the, “University of Chicago Law School from 1997-2004. After an failed attempt to gain a seat in the US House of Representatives, he announced his campaign for the position of a US senator in January of 2003. He was chosen as an Illinois senator in July 2004 with seventy percent of the votes.
Barack Obama is now the current president of the United States. The next four years will be tough for president Obama because so many men and women of all classes are depending on him to lead us out of these dark days.
